Description

Mulgrave Castle is a mansion that was originally built before 1735 for the Duchess of Buckingham. The central part of the building was later heightened, extended, and given projecting side wings by the architect John Soane between 1786 and 1787. In the 1790s, some embattling was added to the parapets. Further modifications were made by William Atkinson between 1814 and 1816, which included the addition of an entrance feature, towers, and turrets. The castle is constructed from coursed, squared stone and features Lakeland slate roofs.

The main garden front has three storeys and consists of 13 bays in total. The wider central bay, which now has a projecting Tudor-style entrance feature, along with three flanking bays on either side, are part of the original house. Each side has a two-bay projecting wing. The windows are sash style with glazing bars. The left return of the building has a five-bay design in a similar style. The irregular rear elevation, designed in a Tudor style, features a projecting hexagonal tower with a stair turret.

Curved screen walls extend from the north angles of the house, concealing the stable yard and ancillary buildings. The castle is set in a fine landscaped environment designed by Humphry Repton in 1792.
