  • II*

Mansion. Earliest (central) part before 1735 for the Duchess of Buckingham, heightened, extended and given projecting side wings by Soane in 1786-7. Some embattling of parapets in the 1790s. Additions of entrance feature, towers and turrets by William Atkinson 1814-16. Coursed, squared stone; Lakeland slate roofs. Main garden front of 3 storeys, 13 bays in all; the wider central bay (now having a projecting Tudor-style entrance feature) and 3 flanking bays either side being of the original house. A further flanking bay leads to the two-bay projecting wing at each side. Sash windows with glazing bars. Five-bay left return in similar style. Irregular rear elevation in Tudor style shows a projecting hexagonal tower with stair turret. Curved screen walls run from north angles of house and conceal the stable yard and ancillary buildings.
