Description
Kirkhill is a house dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, located on Church Street in Hinderwell, Staithes. The building is constructed of stone with a stuccoed front and features a pantiled roof that is stone-coped, with brick and stuccoed chimneys at each end. The front pitch of the roof has been renewed with concrete tiles.
The house has two storeys and five windows, which are sashes with glazing bars. There are five steps leading up to a central panelled door that is framed by a pedimented Doric wood doorcase, complete with reeded and fluted pilasters. To the left of the main entrance, there is a small-boarded door, and the stone area wall has moulded coping.
Inside, the property retains much of its original woodwork. On the ground floor to the right, there is a complete panelled room featuring a reeded frieze and a dentilled cornice at the top of the entablature. The staircase is notable for its cut string design, with two turned balusters per tread, topped with urns on bases and square knops. The rear elevation includes a round-headed staircase window with interlaced glazing bars.
