Description

Ankness Farmhouse and its attached outbuildings date from the mid-18th century, with an extension noted on the lintel from 1789 and further alterations in the 19th century. The farmhouse was built for George Sigsworth and later extended by Isaac Waind. The main house is constructed of herringbone-tooled sandstone, while the outbuildings are made of tooled sandstone and feature a pantile roof. Originally designed as a two-cell, gable-entry plan, the farmhouse was later extended to the right, with a turf house added to the left and a barn to the right.

The farmhouse is two stories high with a three-window front. The turf house has two stories, and the barn is one and a half stories tall. The main entrance to the house features a half-glazed, panelled door beneath a canopy, located to the right of the center. The windows throughout the property are 2-light, 4-pane casements with stone sills and diagonally tooled lintels. Above the door, there is a tooled lintel inscribed with "I I W 1789." The eaves course to the left of the door is coved, while to the right it is stepped. The building has end and centre chimney stacks.

The turf house has no openings on the front, with a coped gable and a shaped kneeler on the left side. The barn features a plank door beneath a diagonally tooled lintel, with a coped gable and shaped kneeler on the right side. At the rear, there is a chimney stack on the right inscribed with "17(indecipherable):GS." Inside, the ground-floor rooms to the left of the passage have chamfered beams with run-out stops, as well as additional chamfered beams.
