Description
This sundial, located approximately 50 metres south-west of Bransdale Mill, dates from the early 19th century, with the pedestal inscribed 1819 and the sundial itself dated 1824. It is made of dressed sandstone and features a copper gnomon. The pedestal is square in shape, standing about 1 metre high and raised on three steps, with a circular dial stone on top. The pedestal has inscriptions on all four sides: the east face reads "John Brown Joseph Ward Masons," the north face states "William Strickland AD 1819," the west face has "Quod hora est vide," and the south face says "Time and life move swiftly." The edge of the dial stone is inscribed with "AM 5824."
