Description
Bransdale Lodge, also known as Cockayne Lodge, is a house built in the mid to late 19th century, with later alterations. It is constructed from herringbone-tooled sandstone, featuring tooled and ashlar dressings, raised and chamfered quoins, and a slate roof. The building has a central stairhall plan with a rear service wing to the right.
The front of the house is two stories high and consists of seven bays, with the central bay being pedimented and projecting. There are part-glazed, round-headed double doors at the center, and a three-window canted bay to the ground floor on the right. The windows on the ground floor to the left and on the first floor are single-pane sashes, each with stone sills and floating cornice lintels. A raised band runs along the first floor, and there is a moulded eaves cornice. The roof is hipped, with stacks at the end left and on both sides of the center, as well as a central stack for the service wing.
At the rear, two original 12-pane sashes remain. The house is prominently situated on a wooded hill at the head of the dale.
