Description
The Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage at Hurst Lighthouse, built around 1852 for Trinity House, is a Grade II listed building. It features a brick base covered in stucco that is scored to resemble ashlar, topped with a coated Welsh slate roof. The cottage is a single storey with three bays across the front and two bays deep, including an outshut and a walled yard on the left side. Notable architectural details include a chamfered plinth, sash windows with glazing bars set in reveals, smaller six-pane windows, and boxed eaves.
The central gabled porch has a blind window beneath a coat of arms, with moulded kneelers supporting the coped gable. To the left of the porch is a six-panel door, with a blind doorway to the right. Flanking windows and a small window in the outshut add to the façade. The hipped roof slopes down over the outshut and features a central stack with four attached flues that have chamfered arises, a cornice, and tall pots, along with a similar single-flue chimney on the outshut. The rear of the building has a narrow central window flanked by larger windows.
On the left return, there is a boarded door with a window to its right, and a privy with a ventilated board door on the right return. The yard wall, approximately 1.5 meters tall, encloses a rectangular yard and includes a gateway with plain piers on the rear side. Inside, many original features remain, such as panelled doors, wall cupboards, panelling below windows, fireplaces with plain surrounds and metal grates, gas lights, and a kitchen dresser in the front left room. In the scullery, there is a set pot, sink, and pump with a leaf terminal handle. The cottage was noted to be in a state of disrepair at the time of inspection.
