Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church built in 1839 by C Underwood, with alterations made in 1886 by W Butterfield. The church is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof, along with timber-frame and plaster additions. Its layout includes a small two-bay chancel with a north vestry and a south low lean-to, as well as a nave that has a south-east chapel, a south boiler house, and a north-west porch, both of which were added later. The church is designed in the Early English style, typical of the Church Commissioners.
The east side of the church features three lancet windows, with the central one raised. The nave has lancets set in raised architraves and is supported by stepped buttresses. On the west side, there is a tall pointed door and a triple lancet window above, topped with a stone bellcote on the gable wall. The added hipped porch has a half-timber upper section and a trefoiled timber arch on the west side. Inside, the church has lost its west gallery, and the furnishings have been replaced due to damp issues.
