Description
Pond House, formerly known as the Bailiff's House, is an inn that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 18th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of brick and has an old plain tile roof. It is two stories high with an attic and features three bays, along with an outshot at the rear.
The front facade has a 20th-century gabled hood supported by brick piers to the left of the center. There are two-light segmental head casements on either side, and a three-light similar window in the right-hand bay. On the first floor, there are two-light casements and a blocked opening. The roof is adorned with three two-light hip-roofed dormers. A large ridge stack is positioned to the left of the center above the door, with another stack at the right end.
Historically, the building was known as 'The Forge Hammer' when Sowley was a significant ironworks site from 1800, but it ceased functioning as an inn in the 20th century.
