Description

The Church of St John is a parish church located in St John's in the Vale. It was rebuilt in 1845, as noted above the porch, but it incorporates parts of an earlier church and underwent restoration in 1893. The building is constructed of coursed mixed slate and igneous rock, reinforced with small galleting pieces, and features a graduated greenslate roof. It has a six-bay nave and chancel, a small rectangular west tower, and a north porch. The windows are Tudor-style, with two-light windows in stone surrounds and a similar three-light window on the east side. The tower includes twin bellcote openings and has battlemented parapets. There is a segmental-arched low stone porch.

Inside, the church has an open timber roof. Notable interior features include the carved Royal Arms of George III and marble wall plaques commemorating the Hodgson family from 1774 and John Wilkinson from 1853. Wooden panelling from box pews originally in Crosthwaite Church was brought to this church in 1893. The 18th-century pulpit and sounding board likely come from another church and were also relocated here in 1893. The early 18th-century sanctuary rails and altar table, designed by Sir G. Gilbert Scott, were gifts from Crosthwaite Church. The stained-glass east window dates from 1895, and there is a heraldic south window dedicated to Henry Corrie Jackson, who died in the Boer War in 1900. The furnishings and fittings were added in 1893.
