Description
J Strong & Son Clog Makers, also known as the Blanket Mill, is a watermill that was originally built as a threshing mill and later converted into a woollen blanket mill in the early 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with raised red sandstone quoins and features a graduated grey slate roof. It is three storeys tall and has a T-shape design.
The left portion of the building has a large segmental cart entrance surrounded by an alternate-block pattern. Above this entrance are two steel casement windows set in red sandstone surrounds. The right portion features a ground floor plank door in an alternate-block surround, with a similar doorway above it that is accessed by external stone steps. The first and second floors also have steel casement windows in red sandstone surrounds, and similar windows can be found at the rear of the building.
Inside, the ground floor retains a wheel pit complete with a cast iron wheel and most of the original machinery, which is also present on the first floor, where it is currently used as a clog makers' workshop. The building is marked as a woollen mill on the 1900 Ordnance Survey map.
