Description
The garden wall surrounding the Rectory in Caldbeck is a Grade II listed structure. It is likely from the 18th century, with repairs made in 1848 by Henry Laing of Sebergham. The wall is tall and constructed from a mix of sandstone and limestone rubble, resting on larger plinth stones. It encloses the garden at the front and side, while a lower wall surrounds a small garden at the rear. The front gateway features rusticated piers topped with pyramidal caps. A side entrance incorporates a reused door lintel from the Rectory, which has a bolection shouldered frieze beneath a scrolled pediment that once enclosed the weathered coat-of-arms of Jeffrey Wybergh, the rector, along with a motto and the date 1718. In the 19th century, a path was created between the churchyard and the Rectory, leading to the churchyard wall becoming the side wall of the Rectory. The wall is listed partly for its group value with the Rectory.
