Description
Ashness Farmhouse and the adjoining barn date from the mid-17th century. The farmhouse features painted rendered walls with projecting eaves stones, set on large plinth stones, and is topped with a graduated greenslate roof that has a large square stone chimney stack. It is two storeys high and consists of four bays, with the barn located to the right under a common roof. There is a 19th-century kitchen extension at the rear, creating an overall L-shape.
The entrance includes a 17th-century studded plank door within a 17th-century stone porch that has side seats and small openings. The windows are Yorkshire-sash style with glazing bars in plain reveals, and there is a smaller fire window on the ground floor to the left. The barn features plank doors and 20th-century glazed openings, along with slit vents. The rear has slate steps leading to a loft doorway.
Inside, the farmhouse has beamed ceilings on the ground floor, an inglenook fireplace with a heck partition, and a chamfered firebeam with a hood. There is also a half doorway on the landing that is likely from the 18th century.
