Description
Hawkshead Fields House and Cottage is a pair of houses built in the 17th century, with a later wing added to the rear in the late 17th or early 18th century and alterations made in the late 18th century. The buildings are constructed of roughcast stone and topped with a slate roof. They are two storeys high and consist of four bays, with the first two bays likely being added later. The first two bays feature casement windows, while the second two bays have sash windows with glazing bars and horns. The entrance to the second bay is plain, and the entrance between the third and fourth bays is framed by a gabled porch with slate sides and a partially glazed six-panel door. The house has a cross-axial stack and gable-end stacks.
On the right side, there is a slate-slab porch leading to the entrance of the rear wing, which also has casement windows. The rear of the house features a large projecting gable-end stack with offsets, sash windows with glazing bars and horns, and slated lintels, while other windows have casements. Inside, there is a plank and muntin partition with fielded panels, two corbelled fireplaces—one of which has ovolo moulding—some panelling with a dado rail, cornice, and fielded panels. The staircase includes turned balusters and a moulded handrail. This property is owned by the National Trust and was a gift from Beatrix Potter.
