Description
This building is a garage located to the south of Hawkshead Fields. It was originally a house converted to stables and now serves as a garage. The structure dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with a late 19th-century addition. It is built of stone rubble with quoins on the south-west wing and has a slate roof, forming an L-plan layout.
The north-west elevation features four garage doors, with the right-hand door being part of the later addition. The left return has a projecting gable-end stack, while the right return also has a gable-end stack. The rear of the building shows signs of blocked windows and entrances, along with one visible window. There is a lower end of a cruck truss visible on the face of the wall.
Inside, there is one full cruck truss with a tie beam and collar, along with signs of wind braces, and remains of a second truss located to the south-west. The building was probably originally a one-bay full-height cottage with an adjoining cow house. There are also remains of a corbelled smokehood. This property is owned by the National Trust and was a gift from Beatrix Potter.
