Description

The stables and barn north-east of Dalemain date back to 1738, as indicated by the inscription over the entrance, with later 18th century extensions. The structure features mixed sandstone rubble walls with flush quoins and is topped with a graduated greenslate roof that has coped gables and kneelers, along with a brick chimney stack.

The complex consists of two low, two-storey, six-bay stable ranges that are parallel to each other and separated by a broad courtyard. These are joined on one side by a tall, late 18th century, two-storey, five-bay barn. The left stable range includes two segmental-arched doorways and a smaller flat-headed doorway with a dated lintel. It also has two-light flat stone-mullioned windows, though some of the mullions have been removed. The barn features irregular doorways and casement windows beneath loft doorways, along with slit vents on two levels. The right stable range has irregular doorways and slit vents as well.

The barn overhangs the stable range at both ends and does not display any features that suggest it was built before the late 18th century. The date on the stables may reflect the time of the rebuilding of Dalemain, which occurred shortly after Edward Hasell married Julia Musgrave in 1735. This building is listed for its group value with Dalemain.
