Description

Haverthwaite House and Cottage is a building that has been converted into two houses. The fireplace in the house is dated 1734. The structure is made of roughcast stone and has slate roofs. It is two storeys high with five bays, while the Cottage has two bays, is recessed, and is lower in height. The windows are sashed with single glazing bars, most of which have horns. The central entrance features a six-panel door, which includes two flush panels, two fielded panels, and two glazed panels, topped by a flat canopy supported by shaped brackets. There are gable-end stacks. The Cottage has casement windows and a plain entrance, along with a tall gable-end stack. The rear of the building has casement windows, and the stair windows have wooden cross-mullioned frames. The lower part of the upper windows features leaded glazing with rectangular quarries.

Inside, there is a partition to the right of the entrance with fielded panels, a dado rail, and a cornice. Corresponding panelling is later and blocks the original two-panel kitchen door. The interior includes ovolo beams and a stone fireplace with a moulded opening and a corbelled lintel. Field panels flank a frieze that features a date and the initials 'IR' above. The grate has fire dogs and flanking stone human masks, along with a crane and a spice cupboard with a door. Another room contains a round-headed niche with shelves that have shaped edges. A two-panel door with H-L hinges leads to a dog-leg stair with square newels and a moulded handrail, but no balusters.
