Description

The Church of St Bridget, located in Calderbridge, was built in 1842 by E. Sharpe. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof with a tile ridge. The church includes a nave, a west tower, long transepts, and a short chancel, which has a lean-to north vestry and a south organ loft. The building has coped gables with kneelers and corbelled eaves, as well as lancet windows. The three-bay nave features alternating lancets and slender buttresses. The tower is supported by diagonal buttresses and has stopped triple lancets on the north and west sides, a lean-to porch with a pointed entrance on the south, two louvred lancet bell openings, a coped corbelled parapet, and pinnacles. The transepts also have diagonal buttresses and stepped triple lancets, with two additional ones on the west returns. The chancel is adorned with stepped triple lancets and diagonal buttresses, while the long lean-to bays each have two stepped lancets and jointed entrances. Inside, the church features braced tie beam and king post trusses, a tower arch with a gallery, and candle sconces on the walls. The east window was created by Holiday in memory of Thomas Irwin, the founder, who died in 1877. The chancel has north and south Commandment boards.
