Description
Fold Cottage, Moss Beck, Rose Lea, Barn End, and adjoining barns are probably of 18th-century origin. The buildings are constructed of roughcast stone with a slate roof. The complex comprises four houses and outbuildings, originally listed as a row of three cottages. The main block is two storeys high and eight bays wide, with each house generally occupying two bays, except for Fold Cottage, which is a single bay, and Barn End, which is three bays. Ground floor dripcourses are visible on the facade. Most windows are small-paned casements. The third bay of the ground floor has two windows, one with fixed glazing. The first bay of the first floor has a small-paned fixed window with a pivoted upper section, while the fourth to eighth bays have top-hung small-paned casements. Three houses feature gabled slate canopies with rustic trellis sides to their entrances, along with two half-glazed doors and a stable-type door to Rose Lea. Barn End incorporates a garage door on the ground floor and a gable-end entrance. Behind Barn End are two outbuildings, the second projecting, with adjacent pivoted barn doors. A rear lean-to outshut features an entrance with a slated lintel. The buildings exhibit a gable-end stack and five cross-axial stacks. Various outshuts are located to the rear. The complex is included on the list for group value.
