Description

North Heasley Farmhouse and the adjoining shippon are located in North Molton and date from the early to mid 17th century, with later remodeling in the mid to late 19th century. The farmhouse is rendered, likely over stone rubble, and features a gable-ended roof covered with asbestos slate. It has 17th-century rendered stone square stacks with weatherings. The shippon, which is probably from the late 18th or early 19th century, is made of stone rubble with some cob on top of the walls and has a gable-ended corrugated-iron roof.

The farmhouse has a three-room plan, facing southeast, with end rooms that have integral end stacks and a small central unheated room that includes a passage to the rear. There is a two-storey outshut at the rear of the center and right-hand end, which incorporates a 17th-century staircase leading to the rear of the central room. The right-hand room has an entrance on the right and was likely the principal room originally. The 19th-century remodeling included changes to the windows and possibly the raising of the eaves. The adjoining shippon is a post-17th-century addition, consisting of a two-storey house and a one-storey shippon with a loft.

The exterior features a roughly symmetrical front with mostly mid to late 19th-century two- and three-light wooden casements, including transoms on the first floor and small panes on the ground floor. There is a 20th-century window on the left side of the ground floor and a 20th-century glazed door on the right, situated under a flat-roofed porch between the house and the outbuilding, which is not included in the listing. A two-light staircase window is located at the rear. The front of the shippon has a half-height boarded door on the left and a 20th-century metal casement on the right, while the gable end to the left features a loft opening with a wooden lintel.

Inside, the right-hand ground-floor room has a 17th-century chamfered cross beam and wall beam with scroll stops, along with an open stone fireplace that has rebuilt jambs but retains a 17th-century chamfered wooden lintel with scroll stops. The left-hand ground-floor room has longitudinal joists and a fireplace with sandstone ashlar jambs and a wooden lintel.
