Description

This range of farm buildings, dating from the mid-19th century, includes a bank barn with a shippon and stables with a loft above. It is located approximately 15 metres south-west of Whitefield Farmhouse. The buildings are constructed from shale stone rubble and feature slate roofs with gable ends, hipped on the left side projection. The bank barn is centrally positioned, with right-angled projections on either side that create a three-sided farm courtyard layout.

The structure has two storeys, with access to the first floor at the rear. The bank barn has two winnowing doors at the front and large double plank doors at the rear. A pyramidal stack of pigeon holes is situated between these doors. There are external stone steps on the right side leading to a plank door, along with four additional ground floor plank doors to the shippon on the left. All openings are topped with cambered stone arches.

The stables project from the right end of the building, featuring an additional lofted shippon in the angle. This section has two plank doors on the east side and two window openings on each side. The stables also include 6-paned windows flanking the plank door. At the left end, there is a projection with a plank door topped by a cambered stone arch, above two larger cart archways. The left archway has a double plank door, while the right is partially infilled with an inserted plank door. The range retains its original 19th-century roughly hewn roof trusses.
