Description

Clouds is a house built in 1925 by Stone and Francis of Minehead. It features rough textured stucco rendering over brick and has a graded Cumberland slate hipped roof with deep eaves and a lead flat. The building has brick axial stacks topped with moulded stone cornices.

The house has a double-depth rectangular plan and is designed in the Cape Dutch style. It stands two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay north front, which includes a large Dutch gable at the center. This gable is adorned with a segmental pediment, volutes, and oculi. The front also features 4-light casements with glazing bars, and above the doorway is a center first-floor cross-mullion-transom stair window. The doorway itself has a bolection moulded architrave and a moulded two-panel door flanked by oval oculi.

The south garden front mirrors the north front with similar casements and includes a projecting central bay with a Dutch gable, segmental pediment, volutes, and an oculus. It also features a full-height former atrium window with a round arch French casement and tall narrow lights that extend up to the eaves. There is a small garden loggia on the west side with an arched front, which is now glazed, and a small single-storey service wing on the east side.

Inside, the house remains largely intact and complete, showcasing brick chimneypieces, an open-well staircase with turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and square newels with ball finials. Other joinery includes panelled doors, bolection architraves, and kitchen cupboards. The former atrium of the garden porch has had a floor inserted, and its balustrade to the landing has been removed. Clouds is a good example of a gentleman's residence from the period in the Cape Dutch style.
