Description
The bridge, likely dating from the 18th century, stands in Brendon parish, with part of it within Countisbury. It is constructed of coursed rubble stone and features a single segmental arch with projecting voussoirs. The parapet was likely raised in the mid to late 19th century, incorporating rubble copings and curved retaining walls to the north abutment. Originally, the bridge probably had a humped-back profile, but the northern approach was eased in the 19th century, resulting in a raised parapet on that side – evidenced by differences in the stonework. The bridge carries the Brendon-Countisbury road over the East Lyn River, which marks the parish boundary on the south bank; a boundary stone is set into the west parapet.
