Description
Dewcombe is a farmhouse, now a house, likely dating from the early 19th century with minor additions probably made in the late 19th century. It is constructed of painted coursed stone rubble, with a slate-hung gable end to the west. The house features a rendered stone stack with slate weathering and a brick cap, and gable-ended graded slate roofs.
The building has a distinctive cruciform plan, with arms of equal length and a central circular stack. Each arm contains a single room, linked by angled passages at the corners. Later outshuts were added at the north-west, north-east, and south-east angles. The kitchen is located in the west wing, and the parlour in the north wing. The south wing was used as a dairy when the house was part of a farm, and the staircase rises from the east wing.
The farmhouse is one storey with an attic. The north-facing entrance front features 19th-century wooden casements, some with segmental brick-arched heads. There are outshuts on the left with a small 19th-century wooden 1-light casement and a 20th-century wooden casement, along with a late 20th-century 2-leaf boarded door. The rear of the right-hand wing contains a 3-light attic casement and a 2-light ground-floor casement. The gable end of the rear wing has a 2-light attic casement and a ground-floor 1-light casement.
The interior is plain, with primarily 18th-century joinery. The cruciform plan is unusual for a house of such modest scale.
