Description
Southway Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century or earlier, located in Widecombe-in-the-Moor. It features solid roughcast walls, likely made of granite, and has a slated roof with a rendered chimneystack that has thatch weatherings on the ridge. The building has a three-room and through-passage plan, with no evidence that the room to the left of the passage was ever used as a shippon. The front of the house has four windows, which include 19th-century casements with glazing bars, except for two sashes on the left side of the ground floor. There is a glazed, gabled entrance porch with coloured glass, dating from the late 19th century, which has been carefully restored in the 20th century. Inside, the hall and inner room have been combined. The hall features a double ovolo-moulded beam with run-out stops and has a gouged date and initials, "1632 EA," on its side. The fireplace, which backs onto the passage, has a reused beam as its lintel.
