Description

MANATON Stable approximately 10 metres south of Ford farmhouse

GV II

Former stable now used as hen-house and cow-house. Probably late C18. Granite rubble walls with larger quoins to the lower end. Corrugated iron roof gabled to the left end and hipped to the right. Plan probably comprised 2 loose boxes with individual access in front, with solid wall dividing them from a row of stalls at the rear. Later open-ended addition, possibly cart shed to one end. Hay loft above stable section. There are various interruptions in the stonework which cannot be explained by the present plan. Stable is 2 storey, cart shed the same height but 1 storey. In the original building there are 2 doors towards the left and right ends on the ground floor with a window in between. Window to first floor left of centre. To the right hand gable end on the ground floor is a small window opening to the left and a door to the right giving access to the stalls. Loading door on first floor. The addition to the left gable end of the stable is open ended and has a doorway to the right end of the front wall. Interior: the loose boxes have wooden hayracks and the original fittings survive to the stalls : the sloping wooden partitions, wooden mangers and hayracks. Heavy rough cross beams support the loft floor above the stalls. The roof is pegged with high collars. Forms a group with Ford Farmhouse (q.v.) and its farm buildings.
