Description
Barra cott is probably a 19th-century remodelling of an earlier house, with granite rubble walls, dressed quoins and a rear wing with slate hanging on the first floor. The roof is slate with gabled ends, and the chimneys are rendered, likely brick. The original house was likely a three-room and through-passage plan, significantly remodelled in the 19th century, possibly into two cottages. A mid-to-late 19th century dairy wing was added to the rear. The building is two storeys high, with each block having a two-window front including a door and window to the right on the ground floor. Most windows are 20th-century casements with glazing bars and timber lintels, though the ground-floor window to the left has a rough granite lintel. All windows are set in small openings. The doors are 20th-century stable-type, with the right-hand door set within an open-fronted stone porch with a lean-to slate roof. A rear wing is located behind the left end of the main block, and a gable-end window, possibly original to the dairy, survives with iron stanchion bars. A tall window opening in the centre of the rear of the house likely intended to light a staircase. The interior is believed to contain two open fireplaces, with the one within the right-hand gable stack having plain granite framing. The building has probably been significantly modernised.
