Cottage Approximately 2 Metres North-West of Clannaborough Farmhouse

This is a cottage with an adjoining shippon (animal shelter) and dog kennels, located approximately 2 metres north-west of Clannaborough Farmhouse. It likely dates to the 17th century, with the dog kennels added in the 19th century. The cottage is constructed of granite stone rubble with large, roughly-shaped quoins, and some cob on the wall tops. It has a disused granite stack and a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly thatched. The original layout comprised a cottage and byre built parallel to the farmhouse, forming a narrow courtyard with a cobbled surface. The building is situated on a hillslope, facing the farmhouse to the south-east. A partition wall of granite rubble now separates the cottage and shippon, although a passage may have previously existed, now blocked by a staircase. The cottage section has a stack at one end and the structure is two storeys high, with a hayloft over the shippon.

The exterior features one casement window to each floor at the cottage’s left end. These are unglazed 19th-century casements with internal shutters. A 2-centred arch doorway, likely of the 19th century and constructed from square-cornered granite ashlar, provides access, along with a plank door. To the right of the doorway is a narrow slit window serving the shippon, above which is a hayloft loading hatch. One gable-ended roof covers the whole structure. Further slit windows are present in the shippon’s right end and rear walls.

Internally, the carpentry is largely plain. A full-height crosswall between the cottage and byre is set into the side walls. The cottage section has an axial beam to the floor with a soffit-chamfered edge and straight-cut stops. A tall, plain granite ashlar fireplace with a side oven is also present. The shippon’s crossbeams and roof are of probably late 17th-century A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars, which have been patched in the 18th and 19th centuries. Adjacent to the left end are three kennels, each with an individual door, separated by granite monolithic posts and covered by a half-hipped roof. This interesting building forms a visually pleasing group with the notable Clannaborough Farmhouse.
