Description

This outbuilding, likely dating from the late 15th century, stands approximately 15 metres north of Neadon Upper Hall. Its original purpose is uncertain, potentially serving as a house or service building for the main hall. The building has undergone significant alterations, particularly at the south-west end, with some rebuilding possibly occurring in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Constructed primarily of granite rubble with dressed quoins, the outbuilding has a corrugated iron roof with gable ends. The east corner, adjoining the courtyard wall, is built upon large dressed granite blocks, indicating it may have continued the walling of Neadon Upper Hall's courtyard. The building is rectangular, running parallel to Neadon Upper Hall. Internal divisions are obscured by later changes, with a stone rubble cross wall extending into the first floor splitting the interior into two sections.

The south-east front features a large vehicular entrance with a rolled steel joist (R.S.J.) and 20th-century sliding doors. A small window opening is visible in a blocked doorway on the right, featuring a timber lintel and frame with remnants of mullion and stanchion bars. To the left is a tall, rectangular window with a low sill and granite lintel. The right gable end has a central ground floor doorway with a timber lintel and plank door, and a window with a timber lintel on the first floor, above which are blocked pigeon holes.

At the rear, the building is built into an embankment, with the first floor accessed by an external stone staircase at the north-east end, which incorporates a dog kennel directly below. Doorways are located at either end of the rear wall, with a noticeable break in the stonework approximately one-third of the way along the right side. The left gable end has a loading door accessible from a higher ground level.

A single original roof truss survives towards the north-east end, closely resembling the undecorated truss at Neadon Upper Hall. This truss features upper crucks morticed at the apex, with a triangular strengthening block and threaded ridge and purlins. Reused dressed timbers are present in the ground floor room at this end, likely originally from a screen within Neadon Upper Hall. The room above was once probably used as a granary, as evidenced by plaster remaining on its walls. The outbuilding is significant due to its relationship and proximity to Neadon Upper Hall; despite substantial alterations, it retains early fabric.
