Description
MANATON SX 77 NE 5/41 - Outbuilding approximately 15 metres north of Neadon Upper Hall including steps and dog kennel adjoining to north-east GV II*
Outbuilding, original purpose uncertain possibly either house or service building to Neadon Upper Hall (q.v.). Probably late C15 origin, considerably altered with much rebuilding at south-west end some of which may be C18/C19. Mostly granite rubble construction with dressed quoins except for east corner (adjoining courtyard wall) the base of which is constructed of large dressed granite blocks suggesting a continuation of the courtyard wall (1 section of which is of similar stonework) from Neadon Upper Hall. Corrugated iron roof with gable ends. Rectangular range situated parallel to Neadon Upper Hall. Original internal plan virtually obscured by subsequent alterations, divided into 2 by stone rubble cross wall extending into first floor. 2 storeys. South-east front has large vehicular entrance at centre with R.S.J. and C20 sliding doors. Small window opening to right in blocked doorway, with timber lintel and frame which has square section mullion and stanchion bars now removed. Tall rectangular window opening to left with low sill and granite lintel. Right hand gable end has central ground floor doorway with timber lintel and plank door, first floor has window with timber lintel, blocked pigeon holes in gable above. To the rear the building is built into the bank and the first floor is approached by an external flight of stone steps at the north-east end with a dog kennel beneath. There is a doorway at either end of the rear wall with a pronounced break in the stonework approximately 1/3 of the way along to the right. The left hand gable end has a loading door approached from higher ground level. Interior: one original roof truss survives towards the north-east end which is very similar in form to the undecorated truss at Neadon Upper Hall, consisting of upper crucks morticed at the apex, with a triangular strengthening block and threaded ridge and purlins. In the ground floor room at this end a number of dressed timbers are re-used as ceiling beams and joists, possibly they came from the original screen in the Upper Hall. The room above was probably once a granary from the plaster on its walls. This building is important for its relationship and proximity to Neadon Upper Hall, although substantially altered its fabric is clearly early.
