Description

Stonelands consists of two cottages built in the mid-17th century. Number 3 was renovated around 1980, while Number 4 was renovated in 1986. The cottages are constructed from plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble stacks topped with 20th-century brick and a slate roof. They are designed as a pair of contemporary one-room plan cottages facing north, with Number 3 on the left and Number 4 on the right. Both have gable-end stacks and 20th-century rear service outshots, and they are two storeys tall.

The exterior features a symmetrical two-window front with 20th-century casements that include glazing bars. The two doors are centrally located, likely framed in 19th-century solid timber with 20th-century doors. Number 3 has a gabled slate-roofed porch added in 1986. The roof runs parallel to the street between the adjoining properties. The rear of Number 3 retains an original first-floor oak window frame with chamfered mullions and rectangular panes of leaded glass.

Inside Number 3, the crossbeam is soffit-chamfered with step stops, and the fireplace is made of stone rubble with a plain oak lintel. The roof features a face-pegged jointed cruck truss. Limited access was available for inspection of Number 4, which has a roughly soffit-chamfered crossbeam of large scantling. The fireplace in Number 4 is blocked, and the roof was not inspected. According to the owners, the earliest document relating to Number 3 dates back to 1702.
