Description
Fordton Cottages is a row of four cottages, likely built in the early 19th century, which were modernised and rearranged in the mid-20th century. They are constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with cob or rubble stacks topped with brick, and feature a thatched roof. The cottages are two stories high and have a continuous roof that is hipped at each end.
The original symmetry of the plan and appearance has been slightly altered due to the 20th-century internal rearrangement. Originally, the cottages were a regular row of two-room homes, with the central pair having mirror plans on either side of a large axial stack and projecting slightly from the fronts of the flanking cottages. Each of these originally had a room on either side of its own axial stack and likely had front doors at the ends of the range.
The overall façade features eight windows, consisting of 19th and 20th-century timber casements, with three- and two-light configurations, each having three panes per light. A central doorway has been inserted for No. 3, while No. 4 on the right side now has a three-window front, and No. 2 on the left of center has a one-room front. The door to No. 1 on the left end is now located on the side. Despite these alterations, the row remains an attractive set of thatched cottages.
