Description
The Berry chest tomb, located approximately 12 metres north-west of the Church of St Michael in Chagford, is a Grade II listed structure dated 1828. It commemorates Richard and Elizabeth Berry. The tomb is made of granite ashlar and features cast iron area railings. It has a chamfered plinth and a thick soffit-moulded flat lid, with each side displaying a rectangular sunken panel. The inscription, located on the south-east side, is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering and notes the deaths of Richard and Elizabeth Berry in 1828, along with some close relatives who died before 1855. The tomb is enclosed by railings set in granite coping stones, with the rails featuring fluted shafts and spear heads, while the corner posts are bulbous with vase caps.
