Description
Bennah Cottage and the adjoining barn are located in Christow and are believed to be a miner's cottage, likely built in the late 18th century. The cottage is constructed of whitewashed, rendered cob and stone, topped with a slate roof that has gabled ends and features end stacks with brick shafts. The barn is made of cob and has a corrugated iron roof.
The cottage is probably designed with a single-depth, two-room layout, with a central entrance leading into a passage. It stands two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front, which includes a gabled timber porch and a 19th-century plank door in the center. The windows are small-pane timber casements with two lights. The barn, located at the left end, features a mullioned window.
On the rear elevation of the cottage, there is a back door, two ground floor windows, and one first floor window. The barn has a large central doorway, a smaller door to the left, and a window to the right. Although the interior has not been inspected, it may still have original features. This cottage and barn are well-preserved examples of roadside buildings and hold group value with Bennah Farmhouse and Bennah House.
