Description

Bennah Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 17th century or earlier, with an addition from the late 19th or early 20th century. The building is constructed of whitewashed rendered stone rubble, while the later addition is made of brick. It features a pantile roof that is gabled at the ends of the main block and hipped at the left end of the wing. The main block has a projecting front lateral stack and a projecting right end stack, with two stacks located at the rear left wing.

The layout of the farmhouse is not entirely clear as the interior and roof were not inspected during the survey in 1987. However, it appears to have a three-room and through passage arrangement typical of the 17th century or earlier, with the lower end positioned to the right. A later rear wing extends at right angles to the hall, creating a T-shaped plan. This wing has been remodeled and extended to the left in the late 19th or early 20th century, projecting beyond the left end of the earlier block.

The exterior of the farmhouse is two storeys high and features an asymmetrical four-window front, with a 20th-century gabled porch located to the right of centre. The windows are two-light timber casements with glazing bars. The left side of the main block has a blocked opening on the first floor and a ground floor window. The late 19th or early 20th-century wing is set back from the main block and linked at an oblique angle. The rear elevation of the main block includes a three-light timber mullioned window on the first floor and a two-light window below, while the return of the wing has a three-light casement with square leaded panes.

Although the interior was not inspected during the survey, it is reported to have ceiling beams, large fireplaces that are concealed by modern plaster, and pegged roof trusses. A roof inspection might uncover medieval timbers and could lead to a revision of the suggested dating. The farmhouse has group value with No 1, Bennah Cottage.
