Description
A row of four houses located on Fore Street, Buckfastleigh, dating to circa 1700. The buildings were originally constructed as a single unit with number 32 to the left. The external fabric is a mix of local grey limestone rubble and stucco, with a slate roof. A gable is visible at the right end, which continues the roofline of number 32. Rear lateral stacks have rendered shafts.
The architectural arrangement is characterized by an asymmetrical 3:2:3 window frontage and deep, coved eaves. Number 33 has a 20th-century shop front, and two 4-pane sash windows on the first floor, set within a late 18th or early 19th century box. A first-floor window in a 1860s Italianate style is distinguished by two round-headed lights, a pilastered and moulded architrave, and moulded sill blocks. A single-storey stone rubble rear service wing with an axial stack is attached to the right of number 33.
Number 34 features a recessed 19th-century six-panel door with flush panels and glazed upper panels, and a shop front to the left with pilasters, a fascia, and a cornice. The shop front includes canted plate-glass windows and a glazed shop door with low panels and overlight. Two first-floor 4-pane sash windows are present. A two-storey brick rear service wing extends from number 34. Number 35, unoccupied at the time of survey in 1992, exhibits a central 20th-century small-pane door with a blind overlight, and a shop front dating from circa 1900. This incorporates pilasters, a cornice on moulded consoles, and 20-pane fixed shop windows flanking a 20th-century small-pane shop door with a 2-pane overlight. A 4-pane sash window with a segmental head is located on the left side of the ground floor. Three first-floor windows, replaced with plastic, are also present. Gabletted dormer windows are visible on both numbers 34 and 35. The plastic replacement windows on number 35 are modern.
The interior was not inspected but may contain features reflecting the original construction.
