Description

The stables and coach house garages, located approximately 100 meters north of Castle Drogo, were built around 1930, likely by Sir Edwin Lutyens. They feature brick walls faced with coursed blocks of granite ashlar, brick stacks with granite ashlar chimney shafts, and slate roofs. The structure consists of three ranges arranged around a courtyard that opens to the north-northwest. The long range at the southern side backs onto the forecourt of Castle Drogo and includes a carriageway that divides the stables and coach houses into two asymmetrical L-shaped blocks, all facing into the courtyard.

The largest block serves as the coach house garages, which has a long north-facing section with a regular row of five large plank doors fitted with substantial strap hinges. The short crosswing to the west contains a two-room workshop with an axial stack, featuring a doorway on the left topped with a clock in a half dormer with a hipped roof. To the right, there is a timber casement window with rectangular panes of leaded glass. The stable wing includes a two-room grooms cottage at the corner with an axial stack, and its crosswing has four stables, each with a plank stable door and an overlight resembling a half dormer with a hipped roof. All roofs are gable-ended. The interiors remain largely original and, while plain, are constructed to a high standard. The coach house and stables/garages are part of the original design of Castle Drogo.
