Description
Castle Cottage is a cottage, likely built for the bailiff or steward of Castle Drogo, around 1930. It is probably designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The cottage features coursed blocks of massive granite ashlar, a granite stack with a granite ashlar chimney shaft, and a slate roof. The building has a double depth plan, with the main room or rooms located at the front and 2 or 3 service rooms at the rear, all arranged around a single massive central axial stack. The rear rooms project on either side behind the front. The main doorway is situated to the left of the angle between the front and rear sections, and the position of the stairs is not known. The exterior has a symmetrical three-window arrangement of timber casements with glazing bars on the main front, though the distribution of other windows is not documented. There is an open porch in the angle with a hipped roof. The main roof is tall, steeply pitched, and hipped at both ends on the front and rear sections. The interior has not been inspected. Castle Cottage is part of Lutyens's Castle Drogo scheme.
