Description

Bowden Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, although it was mostly rebuilt after a fire around 1880. The older section is made of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, while the 19th-century part is constructed from plastered stone rubble with brick dressings. The building features stone rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick and has a thatched roof.

The farmhouse has a T-shaped plan, with the main block facing south, which is entirely from the 19th century. It has a three-room layout with two axial stacks, and the entrance hall with the main stair is located between the center and left rooms. There is a one-room plan rear wing that projects at right angles to the left of center, which is the only remnant of the original 17th-century farmhouse and includes a gable-end stack. The building is two storeys high.

The exterior has a regular but not symmetrical five-window front featuring 20th-century casements without glazing bars. The front doorway is situated to the left of center and contains a 19th-century four-panel door set behind a gabled and slate-roofed porch. The roof is hipped at both ends. Although the interior was not inspected, it is reported to include a significant amount of 19th-century joinery and other details. A 17th-century soffit-chamfered axial beam was observed in the rear block. The farmhouse is attractively located in a valley that is overlooked by Castle Drogo.
