Description
Owley Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around the mid-18th century. It is constructed of granite rubble, with the first storey finished in slate hanging. The roof is made of asbestos slate and features gabled ends, with slate hung chimney stacks at each gable end, the left-hand (west) stack projecting. The building has a double depth plan that includes a wide central through passage stair hall, a kitchen on the higher left-hand side, a smaller parlour on the lower right-hand side, and small unheated service rooms in the integral rear outshut. The farmhouse is two storeys tall and has a four-window range, with 20th-century casements set in the original openings. There is a doorway to the hall-passage located to the right of centre, which is topped by a gabled porch. A catslide roof covers the rear outshut. A quoin in the barn immediately to the north has the date 1755, which may indicate the construction date of the house. Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase in the wide through passage hall, featuring stick balusters. Owley Farmhouse is an interesting and well-preserved example of an 18th-century transitional plan farm, and unaltered houses of this type are rare.
