Description
Walkham Mill is a wheelwright's shop dating from the mid-19th century, with extensions made in the 20th century. The building features stone rubble walls and a gable-ended corrugated iron roof. It has a rectangular plan consisting of one large workshop. The water wheel that powers the machinery is located separately from the building, attached to the right-hand wall at the rear. In the late 19th century, a blacksmith's shop was added along the left-hand wall, and a large addition made of corrugated sheeting was constructed on the right side in the 20th century.
The mill is two storeys high, with the entrance located in the gable end, which has wide openings on both the ground and first floors, along with a small window beneath the gable. There is a lean-to addition from the former blacksmith's shop against the left-hand wall, featuring a doorway in its gable end. The overshot water wheel at the rear is served by wooden launders but is now enclosed. Inside, the gearing and shafts driven by the wheel are still intact and functional. This mill is an unusual example of a purpose-built wheelwright's shop that continues to operate with its original power source.
