Description
The direction post located at the south-east corner of Stone crossroads in Buckland-in-the-Moor dates back to 1790. It is made of granite and features a roughly shaped stone of oblong section, which is set on top of a grass-covered embankment by the roadside. The post has carved inscriptions on its broad faces facing north-east and south-west. The north-east face displays the date 1790, along with an inscription that is difficult to read but may say "NEWTON." The inscription on the south-west side likely reads "ASHBURTON." Additionally, the north-west edge has the carved letter "W," which may refer to the nearby parish of Widecombe. The south-east edge of the post is hidden by the embankment. This direction post is notable for being an unusually early example and one of the few that is dated. It was re-erected in 1963 after having been previously built into the opposite wall.
