Description
This chest tomb, dated 1832, is located approximately 10 metres north of the aisle of the Church of St Michael in Chagford. It commemorates Reverend William Southmead and is made of granite ashlar with cast iron area railings. The tomb features a moulded plinth and a flat lid with a soffit-moulded design. Each long side has a sunken rectangular panel flanked by sunken pilasters. The south-east side is inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, including some italics, recording the deaths of William Southmead in 1832 and his brother John in 1833.
