Description

The stables and coach houses located approximately 60 metres south-west of Chagford House are likely from the early 19th century and were modernised in the late 19th century. They are constructed from granite stone rubble with granite dressings, and some internal brick, featuring brick stacks and chimney shafts, all topped with a slate roof. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the long main block facing north-east. The right side contains stables, while the left side has coach houses. Much of the first floor is used for domestic accommodation, which has likely encroached into the original hayloft space. At the south-eastern end, a short block projects forward at a right angle and includes a coach house that is open to the roof.

The exterior has an irregular arrangement of doorways and windows. The left section, which is the coach house, features three large double doorways and two casements above. To the immediate right is a doorway that leads to stairs for the first-floor accommodation, followed by the stable section that has four windows and a stable door left of centre. A stone mounting block is located to the left of this window, and there is a first-floor hayloft loading hatch at this end. The coach house wing has three large double doorways, two of which have segmental arches made of granite ashlar voussoirs. Most of the joinery details for the windows and doors date from the 19th and 20th centuries. The main block has a gable-ended roof, while the wing features a hipped roof. The rear side, facing south-west, is more regular and includes four gabled half dormers, all with 20th-century casements that have glazing bars. The interior mainly consists of secondary joinery and plain carpentry details.
