Description
This is a bank barn located immediately south of Smallacombe Farmhouse, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed from granite rubble with dressed granite quoins and features a hipped and gable-ended roof that has been re-clad in corrugated iron sheets. The barn has a typical bank barn layout, with a shippon on the ground floor facing east and a barn above, which includes a cart entrance at the higher ground level at the rear (west). In the late 19th century, a short wing was added to the rear of the north end, creating an overall L-shaped plan. The exterior has two storeys, with shippon doorways on the ground floor and taking-in doorways on the first floor on the east front. The rear features a central cart entrance and the later wing to the left. Inside, there are lapped-collar roof trusses and horizontal common-rafters, making this barn a notable example of a large Dartmoor bank barn.
