Description
The Early Christian memorial stone at Sampford Spiney is believed to date from the 6th to 8th century and is currently used as a gatepost. Made of granite, it is located on the west side of a lane that runs from Huckworthy Cross to Tavistock.
The stone stands approximately 1.6 meters high, although there is likely more stone buried underground. On its eastern face, four letters are carved, reading "RE NR." Near the base, there is a vertical slot that likely represents the horizontal letter "I." Close to the top of the stone, there are additional marks that may indicate further letters or could be decorative in nature. A modern steel gate is attached to the stone.
