Description
The ruins of an old manor house are located approximately 40 metres south-south-east of Wray Barton in Moretonhampstead. This late Medieval structure features walls made of granite ashlar, which survive up to the first floor height and include dressed granite details. At the center of the ruins is a doorway with a chamfered pointed arch, which is rebated for a door. To the right of the doorway is a projecting lateral chimney stack that has a chamfered plinth. On the reverse side of the ruins, there are remnants of a fireplace, including chamfered well-cut jambs and the beginnings of a shouldered lintel, although the lintel itself is missing.
This site is noted in the Domesday Book as Wercia or Wergi and was a separate manor from Moreton. White's Directory from 1878 mentions a large Tudor mansion at this location, which is likely the current ruins, indicating that it may have been abandoned or downgraded when a 19th-century house was constructed nearby.
