Description
Pepperdon Hole is a cottage, originally two cottages, built in the mid-19th century with 20th-century alterations. The structure features granite rubble walls with dressed granite details and a slate roof that has overhanging eaves at the gable ends. The gable end chimneys are made of granite blocks and have dripmoulds, reflecting a Victorian Gothic style.
Originally, the building consisted of two mirror-image plan cottages, each with a double-depth layout and a single front. The front room was larger and heated, accessed directly, while a small unheated service room was located behind it, leading to a staircase that provided access to two rooms on the first floor. Each cottage had an outshut or store attached at the gable end, with no internal access between them. In the 20th century, the two cottages were converted into a single dwelling.
The cottage is two storeys high with a symmetrical two-window facade and a central porch. The windows feature pointed arched heads and 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. The central gabled granite rubble porch has splayed corners and a pointed granite arched doorway, which is fitted with a 20th-century plank door, flanked by lancet windows on either side. There are outshuts at both ends, each with a late 20th-century lancet window that matches the others.
Inside, each main room has an open fireplace with a plain timber lintel and a brick oven on one side. The original winder stairs are preserved at the left-hand end of the cottage.
