Description
The Methodist Chapel in Sampford Courtenay was built in 1816 and enlarged in 1838. It features rendered walls that are likely made of stone rubble, possibly with some cob, and has a gable-ended slate roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles. The chapel has a rectangular plan with an entrance at the gable end and a small bell tower on the left side, which includes a projecting staircase leading to the gallery at the front.
The exterior showcases a gabled front with two windows on the first floor that have two-centre arched heads, while the ground floor windows have shouldered heads. There is a central panelled door with an arched surround, and a large trefoil opening is situated between the two first-floor windows. A late medieval granite cross has been re-used at the apex of the gable. The sides of the chapel feature two-light Decorated style windows. The belfry, which projects from the left side, has a wooden superstructure and a conical roof.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is said to have a segmental barrel-vaulted ceiling, and there may be furnishings of interest.
