Description
This building is a cottage, originally a barn, located approximately 6 metres north of Thorn Farm Cottage. It dates from the 17th century, possibly earlier, and was converted to domestic use around 1980. The structure features large blocks of granite ashlar with some granite stone rubble patching and has a thatched roof. The cottage is a long, low building built across the hillslope on a north-south axis. It now has a three-room layout but was originally a threshing barn that was open to the roof and had large nearly central opposing doorways in the long walls, which are now blocked. Since the conversion in 1980, it is a single-storey building with attics.
The exterior includes all windows and doorways that were added around 1980. The west front has two doorways and a casement window at the left end, with the window blocking a small doorway and the current doorway to the right blocking a larger original doorway. There is another casement window at the north end and two more on the east side, which also features a large blocked doorway and a small slit window near the left end. The roof has half-hipped ends.
Inside, the interior is entirely a result of the 1980 conversion, with only the roof structure being older. The roof, dating from the 17th century, consists of a series of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars and carpenters' assembly marks. This former barn shares structural similarities with the nearby Court Cottage, which is dated 1651. The cottage is part of a varied group of listed buildings that make up the hamlet of Thorn.
