Description

Two closely situated monuments located approximately 13 meters north of the northwest corner of the Abbey Church in Tewkesbury date from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The first monument is a chest tomb from the 18th century made of limestone. It features an inscription that may refer to Thomas Mew, although it lacks a date. The tomb has a heavy flat ledger with cyma-moulded edges, fielded panels adorned with drapes, and inset ends leading to quarter balusters, all resting on a chamfered base. While it shows signs of wear, its style is characteristic of early to mid-18th century memorials found in the Cotswolds.

The second monument is a chest tomb from the mid to late 17th century, also made of limestone and featuring some brick repairs. This tomb has a heavy flat ledger slab with chamfered edges set on plain panels, all supported by a heavy chamfered base. The end panels have deep incised lettering that is difficult to read, but the date 1733 is discernible. The long sides of the monument include brick end panels that frame a set-back central panel. Its design is typical of 17th-century tombs, showcasing heavy and relatively plain elements, and it predates the date found on it.
