Description
The Healing Monument, located approximately 3 metres north of the north wall of Abbey House in Tewkesbury, is a chest tomb dating from 1848. It is made of sandstone and features a tall structure with a flat pyramidal top, which has moulded edges. The tomb includes raised inscription panels and inset ends to the cornice and base mouldings, all resting on a cyma-mould base and platform. Originally, it was enclosed by a railing. The inscription on the north side commemorates Samuel, son of Samuel and Mary Healing, who died in 1848 at the age of 19, as well as Mary Healing, who died in 1862. There are various later inscriptions, with the most recent dating as late as 1916. The panel on the east side is significantly weathered. The Healing family were notable industrialists in the 19th century, and Healings Mill continues to be a major employer in Tewkesbury.
